SSH, also known as secure shell, is a term used to describe a network protocol that allows you to take a jailbroken iPhone and use it to transfer files back and forth via a WI-FI connection, which is by far the easiest way to transfer data between your phone and PC. If you are looking to install new applications, transfer podcasts, games, movies, or music, then using if you learn how to connect to your iPhone via SSH you will be able to do it much easier and faster than any other method. There are a few steps involved in the process, and you will need to meet a few requirements to be able to do so, but once you’ve figured it out you will have yourself a lot of time and hassle.

The first requirement for learning how to connect to your iPhone via SSH is to make sure that you have an unlocked, or “jailbroken,” iPhone. If you don’t know what this is, then I suggest looking it up online to find out if it is something you are interested in. The current iPhone firmware update is version 2.2, so try to look for some information that includes that version.
Next, you need to make sure you have an SSH program on both your computer and your iPhone, once you’ve done that you are very close to being able to connect to your iPhone via SSH. You can turn SSH on and off via the iPhone menus to prevent others from trying to hack in, but make sure that before you attempt to connect to your iPhone via SSH that you turn it on.
To find the iPhone’s IP address, you need to go into WI-FI settings and go into the home profile section. Use that number as your iPhone’s IP address. Then you will need to move to your home PC and bring up the SSH application. The next step for how to connect to your iPhone via SSH is to type in the iPhone’s IP, the username “root,” and the password that you established. This should get you access to your iPhone via SSH. You should see some sort of confirmation and then you will be taken to a screen where you can start transferring or installing files.
If you are familiar with using SSH or other programs, such as FTP, then you will find this to be a fairly simple process. However, as I said before if you really want to learn how to connect to your iPhone via SSH then you will need to make sure your iPhone is jailbroken first. This is usually the greatest obstacle for people to overcome. If you already have a jailbroken iPhone, then it is as simple as installing the programs on both ends, setting up the IP and password information, and logging in to start doing business. You really can save yourself a lot of time if you use this method to transfer files back and forth on your iPhone.
